Etgar Keret has been hailed as the voice of young Israel. His short stories, surreal, blackly comic, sometimes violent and often intensely poignant, embody Israeli life. At this JCC Movie Mondays come and see how three filmmakers have transposed three of his stories onto the screen.
Wrist cutters: A Love Story (Goran Dukic, USA, 2007, 85 mins) with soundtrack by Gogol Bordello, is a quirky, surreal and surprisingly uplifting version of Keret’s story Kneller’s Happy Campers. Showing with A Bucks Worth (Tatia Rosenthal, USA, 2005, 6 mins), an animated short depicting an encounter between two unhappy men; and Crazy Glue (Herve Lasgouttes, France, 2007, 10 mins), the story of a relationship in need of fixing.
The screening will be preceded by free drinks and a private view from6.30pm. Exclusively for ticket holders at Rathbone, London’s new photography gallery, 42 Windmill Street, London W1T 2JZ.
PRICE: £10

November 4 2008 will see the most exciting and arguably most important US election for a generation. A couple of weeks before America goes to the polls, Opinion Soup asks which candidate will be best for Israel – and for Jews around the world.
Barack Obama is committed to dialogue with America’s enemies – including Iran – whilst John McCain promises more of the robust hawkishness of the last eight years.
Publicly both insist that they will stand firmly by Israel. Nevertheless, many commentators see a difference between Obama’s commitment to reviving US-led diplomatic efforts and McCain’s unconditional support for the Jewish state.
Daily Mail commentator Melanie Phillips has warned that it will be a grave mistake if American Jews back Obama, while invited speaker Jonathan Freedland, Guardian columnist, insist that Obama is the best hope for America - and the world.
BBC News presenter Jon Sopel chairs this compelling discussion on the greatest contest of 2008.
Date: Sunday 12 October
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Hampstead Town Hall, 213 Haverstock Hill, London NW3
Price: £10

Over the past few months, we have seen pictures reminiscent of Ethiopiain the 1980’s. Described by the Head of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) as ‘a silent tsunami which knows no borders sweeping the world’, food shortages and rising prices are plunging millions more peopleinto severe malnutrition. To mark World Food Day, Jay Rayner, restaurant critic for The Observer and presenter of Channel 4 Dispatches ‘The Truth About Food Prices’ will be in conversation with David Hallam from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation discussing how this situation has arisen, and whether anything can be done to prevent famine spreading. Sheila Dillon, presenter of Radio 4’s Food Programme, will chair the panel.

helping to build our amazing sukkah with pizza to give us energy to do it.
Dwelling in a Sukkah is a beautiful commandment to fulfil. Here at West London Synagogue we do not have an outside space for our Sukkah so we construct a gorgeous symbolic sukkah inside. We need West London Collective to help decorate it. It’s fun, it’s sociable and if you want to make your own Sukkah at home we’ll tell you how.
