In collaboration with Jewish Book Week, a discussion on refuge and writing with three leaders in the field.
For asylum seekers in Britain, personal narratives are a lifeline - the difference between gaining refugee status and deportation, between acceptance and rejection. But these narratives are rarely heard; they are drowned out and obscured by the media, government policy and the general invisibility afforded to the Other.
Hear from three panellists who seek to redress this in their work: Gillian Slovo, whose new novel, Black Orchids offers a compelling portrait of a mixed-race family in 1950s Ceylon and London; Edie Friedman whose book with Reva Klein, Reluctant Refuge, examines Britain’s centuries-long ambivalence to the world’s dispossessed; and Caroline Moorehead whose recent book Human Cargo: Journeys Among Refugees uncovers a myriad of limbo existences – people whose perilous escapes rarely lead to a happy ending.
As writers and activists, all three offer an antidote to the dehumanisation faced by refugees, not through prescription but by giving submerged narratives a voice through fiction, testimony and journalism.
Chaired by Sue MacGregor, a former host of Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and Today programme and current presenter of The Reunion and A Good Read.
In partnership with Jewish Book Week.
